Spring Branch Independent School District honors company for inspiring achievement among students
AMEC, the international engineering and project management company, today announced that Houston-based subsidiary AMEC Paragon received a “Good Neighbor” award from Spring Branch Independent School District (SBISD) in appreciation of its active support of the district and its students.
Named as one of 119 Houston-area companies that made a difference as a “Class of 2007 SBISD Good Neighbor,” AMEC Paragon mobilized more than 45 employees to prepare almost 200 students for success by:
- Tutoring Spring Woods High School seniors in math and science to help
them succeed on the standardized Texas Assessment of Knowledge and
Skills (TAKS) exit exam. Students must pass this exam to earn a high
school diploma.
- Mentoring students at Northbrook High School and Spring Woods Middle
School
- Supporting Texas Scholars, a program that encourages students
to maximize their high school experiences and focus on higher
education.
AMEC Paragon employees gave presentations to students at Landrum and Spring Woods Middle Schools to encourage eighth graders take more challenging courses in high school.
AMEC Paragon has partnered with SBISD to advance these and other programs for more than five years.
Terrance Ivers, AMEC Paragon’s president, said, “To be a good corporate citizen, we must always support students and help them succeed – through high school and beyond. As baby boomers retire, we must continue to stress the value of math and science to support the engineering profession and the energy industry as a whole in order to pass the torch to the younger generation.”
The Spring Branch Education Foundation (SBEF) sponsors the SBISD Good Neighbor program, among other initiatives, to help the district realize its mission of providing its 32,000 students with the highest quality education, supporting all aspects of child development.
“AMEC Paragon exemplifies the definition of a good neighbor. Many students would never be exposed to a broader view of the world without a mentor, and we are fortunate to have companies like AMEC Paragon involved with our students,” said Gary Junek, SBEF chairman. “The time commitment of their employees will truly have a lasting impact on our students for years to come. When someone takes an active interest in the life of one of our students, positive things happen and society benefits.”
Karen Sauceda, currently a junior at Northbrook High School with aspirations to attend college, has been mentored by AMEC Paragon Proposal Coordinator Judy Madrid since she was in seventh grade.
Sauceda said,” Judy has helped and supported me in so many ways. My math grades improved, and we’ve even done extracurricular things together. When she visits me during lunch at school, she always listens to my concerns. She really is like another good friend.”
