Beatrice Offshore Wind Project (Scotland)

AMEC designed and managed delivery of the world's first deepwater wind energy turbines, which are located 23 km offshore in the Moray Firth, northeast Scotland. The project uses two of the largest turbines installed anywhere in the world, each 85 meters tall, to test the technical and economic feasibility of deepwater wind farms in depths of about 35 to 45 meters deeper than existing offshore wind farms.

Hull Offshore Wind Farm (Massachusetts, USA)

For a wind farm to be located one mile or more offshore, AMEC Paragon provided preliminary structural designs, installation plans, and cost estimates for various sites. Plans call for four 3.6 MW wind turbines, for a total generation capacity of 14.4 MW.

Biomass Projects

AMEC has supported the supply and delivery of biomass projects since 1948, with a major focus on using wood waste to generate power for the North American forest industry. Projects have included co-firing with Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) and sewage sludge.

We have provided definition, conceptual and detailed design, construction, and project management services for biomass projects in Canada, US, Fiji, Chile, Uruguay, Czech Republic, Indonesia, Australia, Poland and the UK.

In the UK we are supporting the SUPERGEN Bioenergy research program, aimed at delivering improved biomass processes, including biomass power, co-firing and bio-refineries. We also have applied our biomass and gasification knowledge to studies examining the pyrolysis and gasification of waste to provide power and heat.

Verenium Corporation – Cellulosic Ethanol Demonstration Plant (Louisiana, USA)

Verenium Corporation, a leader in the commercialization of the production of biofuels, chose AMEC to provide a wide range of professional services at its 1.4 million gallon-per-year demonstration plant in Jennings, Louisiana. The Jennings plant will allow Verenium to demonstrate the commercial viability of its patented technology on a variety of feedstocks, including bagasse (sugar cane waste), energy cane and wood.
